Sehri Ki Dua – Sehri Dua, Niyyat & Authentic Guidance
Looking for the dua for Sehri? Learn what is authentically established about the intention for fasting, Suhoor and what to say before beginning the fast.
Is There a Specific Sehri Ki Dua?
There is no specific authentic dua that must be recited at Sehri to make the fast valid. The intention (niyyah) for fasting is an intention of the heart. You do not need to pronounce a fixed Arabic sentence.
If you know that you are eating Suhoor because you intend to fast, that intention is present. Details about the timing of intention can differ according to the type of fast and school of Islamic jurisprudence.
Common Sehri Niyyat Wording
Some people learn phrases such as Wa bisawmi ghadin nawaytu… as a “Sehri dua.” It is better not to present such a phrase as a required Prophetic dua when a sound hadith establishing it as a fixed Sehri supplication is not available.
You may make a simple intention in your heart to fast for Allah and make any permissible personal dua.
Sunnah of Sehri / Suhoor
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged Muslims to eat Suhoor and described it as containing blessing. This is authentically reported in Sahih al-Bukhari 1923 and Sahih Muslim 1095.
Suhoor should be completed before the beginning of Fajr. Follow a reliable local prayer timetable for the Fajr time in your location.
What Can I Say at Sehri?
You may say Bismillah before eating, thank Allah for His provision, and make general dua. For the fast itself, sincere intention is what matters rather than memorizing a special formula.
This distinction is important because many online pages label a particular Arabic sentence as an obligatory or established “Sehri dua.” A Muslim should distinguish between a personal wording of intention and a supplication authentically attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.
