How does the Islamic calendar work?

The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar with 12 months. A lunar year is about 354 or 355 days, so Islamic dates move earlier through the Gregorian seasons by roughly 10–11 days each year.

For religious observance, the beginning of a month can depend on crescent sighting and local authority announcements. Calculated calendars are useful for planning, but official/local moon-sighting decisions may differ.

The four sacred months

The four sacred months are Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qa’dah and Dhul Hijjah.
